How to Customize a Budget-Friendly Catering Menu (RM30–RM35/pax) for Corporate Training Events
Training days run on a tighter budget than client-facing events, but attendees still need a proper lunch to stay focused through the afternoon session. RM30–RM35 per pax is the sweet spot: it's enough for a full buffet with real protein variety, without paying for the seafood and waitress-service upgrades a corporate dinner would need. Here's how to build that menu without overspending.
Why RM30–RM35/pax Works for Training Days
At RM12–RM22/pax you're limited to lunch boxes or a very basic spread — fine for a quick internal briefing, but thin for a full-day workshop. Once you cross into the RM28–RM45/pax mid-range tier, you unlock a proper buffet: two carb options, a full protein line-up, vegetables, dessert and drinks. RM30–RM35 sits right at the entry of that tier — the most cost-efficient point where you get a complete buffet without paying for premium proteins like prawn, beef or lamb.
Step 1 — Start From the Right Package Tier
On our Custom Package builder, the Lite Asian tier is priced at RM32/pax and gives you 8 items: 2 carbs, 1 chicken, 1 fish, 1 vegetable, 1 tofu/egg, 1 dessert and 1 beverage — exactly the shape of a training-day lunch. If you'd rather skip the customisation step entirely, the Packages page has fixed menus in the same range: Menu 30A/30B (Asian, RM30/pax) and Menu 35A/35B (Western, RM35/pax), plus RM30 tea break sets if your training day needs a mid-morning or mid-afternoon break too.
| Option | Price/pax | Items | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lite Asian (Custom) | RM 32 | 8 items | Full control over every dish |
| Menu 30A / 30B (Fixed) | RM 30 | 7 items | Fast decision, no customisation needed |
| Menu 35A / 35B (Fixed) | RM 35 | 8 items | Western-style spread, fixed menu |
| Tea Break RM30 (Asian/Western) | RM 30 | 7–9 items | Pairing with a half-day session |
Step 2 — Pick Proteins That Keep You in Budget
Chicken and fish are the backbone of every package in this price range, and that's by design — they're the most cost-stable proteins. The moment you add prawn, extra seafood or a "premium" protein like beef, lamb or satay, you move into the Deluxe Fusion tier at RM58/pax. For a training day, one chicken dish and one fish dish is plenty — attendees are there to learn, not to be wowed by the menu.
💡 Budget Tip: Swap a second protein slot for an extra vegetable or tofu/egg dish instead of paying for seafood. It keeps the RM32/pax price intact and still gives guests a filling, varied plate — chicken and tofu together read as "generous," not "cheap."
Step 3 — Build the Menu in the Custom Package Tool
- Go to Custom Package and select the Lite Asian (RM32) tier.
- Pick your 2 carbs (e.g. fried rice + noodles), 1 chicken dish, 1 fish dish.
- Fill the vegetable and tofu/egg slots — this is where you can lean healthier for a training crowd sitting all day.
- Choose 1 dessert and 1 beverage.
- Confirm your pax count (minimum 25 pax) and get an instant quote before you commit.
If your group prefers Western food, the same logic applies with the Basic Western tier at RM38/pax — slightly above RM35, but worth checking if a couple of items can be trimmed to bring it back in range, or simply use Menu 35A/35B from the Packages page instead.
Step 4 — Choose a Setup That Matches the Training Room
Setup cost is where budgets quietly creep up. Two options:
- Delivery Only (+RM35): Food arrives ready to serve. Ideal if your training room or office pantry already has a table — the cheapest way to stay close to your RM30–RM35/pax target.
- With Buffetline Setup (+RM250): Includes proper buffet tables, chafing dishes and skirting, plus 1 event coordinator and 1 waiter for every 50 pax. Better for hotel training rooms or venues with no serving furniture, but adds a flat cost on top of your per-pax total — divide it across your headcount to see the real per-pax impact (e.g. RM250 ÷ 50 pax = RM5/pax extra).
Sample Budget: 50-Pax Full-Day Training
| Item | Detail | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Lunch — Lite Asian (RM32/pax) | 50 pax | RM 1,600 |
| Setup | Delivery Only | RM 35 |
| Optional: Tea Break RM30 (Asian) | 50 pax, mid-afternoon | RM 1,500 |
| Total (lunch + setup only) | RM 1,635 |
Prices exclude 6% SST. If your training day is full-day with a tea break included, budget the tea break as a separate line — mixing it into the RM30–RM35 lunch target will only stretch your per-pax figure thin on both meals.
What to Skip to Stay Under RM35/pax
- Extra buffetlines (+RM200 each) — one line is enough for groups under 100 pax
- Premium cutlery upgrades — standard disposables are fine for an internal training day
- Prawn, seafood or "premium" protein add-ons — these push you into the RM50+/pax tier
- Weekend scheduling — training days booked on weekdays avoid the Saturday/Sunday surcharge many caterers apply
